New two-piece hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) capsules have been developed as an alternative to hard gelatin capsules (HGCs) for use with chemically incompatible actives, or hygroscopic or moisture-sensitive ingredients. This new technology eliminates the need for secondary gelling agents and instead uses thermogelation for film formation, resulting in performance profiles similar to those of gelatin. This webinar describes characteristics of the new HPMC capsules (marketed as Capsugel® Vcaps® Plus) are described and their in vitro and in vivo performance is compared with that of traditional HGC dosage forms. Modeling and study results show how these new capsules can be used to inhibit drug crystallization from a supersaturated solution.
